Top 40 Box Office vs Trailer Play Ranking
We often get asked if trailers are a good predictor of box office success. The answer isn’t totally clear as you’ll see from the chart below. We took the Top 40 Box office titles and matched it against IVA’s Top 40 ranking for trailer plays. Sometimes the correlation is really close (see Guardians of the Galaxy, Transformers: Age of Extinction; Maleficent, X-Men, Days of Future Past). Other times, the correlation is much weaker: see The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, or The Amazing Spider-Man 2). Both titles are part of a strong franchise where movie goers knew they wanted to see the movie based on the strength of the title, and didn’t need the trailer to firm up the decision. At any rate, take a look to see how the year stacked up.

Old on the Charts
It’s always fun when we get our year end stats together to look at more than just the Top 40. So here are a few of the interesting things that we uncovered while working on the charts.
- Trailers for 2013 movies continue to get views. Our two highest ranking 2013 trailers were for American Hustle and Frozen.
- Four movie remakes generated enough buzz to pull the trailers for earlier versions back onto the charts: Godzilla, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtes, Hercules, and Planet of the Apes were all on the charts twice, once for the new and once for the old.
Most Anticipated 2015
- Avengers: Age of Ultron
- Fast & Furious 7
- Jurassic World
- Star Wars: the Force Awakens
- Minions
- Wild Card
Thanks for your support in 2014, and we wish you much success in 2015.
Happy New Year!
Sincerely,
the Team at IVA
