The Diffusion Group (TDG) released a report this week which estimates that 488 million households worldwide will have Over-The-Top (OTT) digital video available by the year 2016. TDG based their estimate on the following a number of key indicators, including the following:
- wider availability of content,
- replacement of older TV's with 'net ready devices'
- continuing growth of the on-demand habit.
Their research shows that about 106 million people worldwide viewed digital feeds via TV in 2010. However, their data also indicates that there is a significant gap between those households that have connected devices/TV's and broadband service and those who use them. TDG estimates that approximately 51% (250 million) of households accessed OTT.
TDG Senior Partner Colin Dixon said “In 2009, net-based TV video services were few and far between. Today, when a consumer connects a 'smart' TV, a Blu-ray player, or any other video platform to the Internet, they will find a wealth of TV-optimized content and applications at their disposal.”
