EIDR Interim Best Practices for Theatrical Trailers

Jun 12, 2012

EIDR, the Entertainment  ID Registry has created a white paper on trailers for the registry. This document details the interim best practice for creating a Trailer Record as a Referent Type Supplemental with relationships to Theatrical Titles.  More information about EIDR can be found at their website, http://eidr.org.

The EIDR organization is currently working on the Best Practices around Supplemental Content. In an attempt to provide guidance and best practices during the transition period the follow document outlines the procedure and best practices for registering a Supplemental Trailer record for Theatrical Content.

2 Practice

In general the creation of the Supplemental record for a Trailer is similar to that of any other root Level Object in EIDR. In this section we will identify the key best practices around the constriction of these records. To create a Supplemental Referent Type record, Trailer you need to construct the data in the following manner.

2.1 Structural & Referent Type

The Trailer should be considered a root level object, and should therefore be identified with the Structural Type of “Abstract”. In addition as a Trailer it should be identified as a Referent Type of “Supplemental”.

  • Structural Type: Abstraction

  • Referent Type: Supplemental

    2.2 Title

The title needs to refer the original work for which is it intended to be a trailer of in the Title. It is important that an identifying name is used to allow de‐duplication of these records.

Supplemental: Trailers ‐ Theatrical 1 2012/05/03

  • Correct – The Dark Knight [Trailer 1], Spiderman [Trailer A]

  • Incorrect – Trailer 1, Trailer A
If you are creating a title for a trailer that has a specific use, or property and is not a

more generic number or character, you can use the following method to capture it.

  • Correct – The Dark Knight: Director’s Interview

  • Incorrect – Director’s Interview or The Dark Knight [Director’s Interview]

    2.3 Approximate Length

For this field it is important to remember to use the approximate length of the Trailer itself and not the root title it is a promotion of.

  • Correct – PT2M17S

  • Incorrect – PT2H01M

    2.4 Release Date

The best practice for release date is to use the date of the Trailers release, as these may differ by a significant time to the release date of a film.

    2.5 Principal agents

The best practice for Trailer will be to use the principal agent (producer, distributor...) from the Root Title for which the trailer is a promotion of, and not the principle agent responsible for the creation of the trailer itself.

For example for Dark Knight, you would use 10.5237/A929‐C667 (warner bros.). A EIDR Registering body, that also distributes the trailers could also use their ID as Principal Agent for the Trailer only, even though it is not associated with the root work it is promoting.

    2.6 Director & Actors

As with Principal Agents, the best practice for Directors and Actors will be to use them from the Root Title record for which the trailer is a promotion of.

    2.7 Light Weight Relationships

At this time it is required that all trailers being created are related to its associated root level theatrical content with a Light Weight Relationship (LWR). Specifically the “IsPromotionOf” relationship should be used at the time of record creation.

To create a LWR input the following:

  • EIDR ID for the Root Record that is being Promoted

  • Promotion Class: Theatrical Trailer
