Video Helping Drive Internet Growth

Jun 21, 2012

A new report from Cisco projects that Internet usage will quadruple by 2016 driven by an explosion in the number of Internet-connected devices - and by online video.

According to the newest report, the number of Internet video users will grow from 792 million in 2011 to 1.5 billion by 2016.  Cisco projects that 1.2 million video minutes will be delivered on the internet every second on 19 billion network connections.  That's an increase from 10 billion in 2011.

Cisco also predicts that Web traffic on computers will drop from 94% to 81% - the flip side of their projected increase Web activity on tablets, smart phones, and other connected devices.  IPTV usage will also rise according to the report, from 4% last year to 6%, and that usage will account for 18% of Internet video traffic, up from 7%.
